Y5 Spring 2 2019
Topic 4: Potions
For the second part of the spring term, we'll be focusing on science through our Potions topic and trying to answer some of these questions:
- What are the three states of matter?
- What questions would a scientist ask about this potion?
- How would you sort these potion ingredients?
- How would you separate the ingredients in this potion?
- Which will dissolve?
- What is a solution?
- Which changes are reversible?
There is no home learning project for this topic.
Visual texts - We'll be focusing on describing characters, settings and feelings and creating suspense in this story-writing unit. We’ll begin by watching different visual texts then we'll create our own story to accompany the animations. Explanations – Through our science work, we'll be looking at how to use precise vocabulary to give clear explanations. We'll also be developing our use of causal connectives to give reasons.
Spelling – We'll be focusing on revising spelling words in sets 9-12 then learning words from sets 13 to 16. Copies of spellings for each group can be found here.
Calculation: using numbers to at least 1,000,000 to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. Tables facts - knowing all tables facts to 12 x 12 from memory, using these to work out division facts e.g. if 7x8=56, then 56÷8=7 and applying facts to a wider range of numbers e.g. 70x80=5600, 560÷80=7. Fractions - using tenths, hundredths and thousandths, finding fractions and percentages of amounts and rounding decimals. Shape – drawing, comparing and measuring angles, using coordinates to reflect and translate shapes. Data - reading and drawing line graphs. Measuring – calculating perimeter and area, converting between different units, solving problems involving measurement.
Art: Op Art - we'll be creating illusions using line and colour and exploring the work of artists such as Bridget Riley, Escher and Vasarely.
Computing: We have IT twice a week and also have access to laptops in class during the mornings. We'll be focusing on graphics, considering digital copyright, learning how to edit photographs, exploring different effects and using these to create digital Op Art. We'll also be considering how digital images can be manipulated to promote a product or idea and how this can be deceptive.
PE: Outdoor PE is on Tuesday afternoons with Mrs Taylor. We’ll be continuing with the Golden Mile so please have full kit including trainers available in school at all times. Indoor PE: 5K – Friday, 5B – Tuesday.
RE: Christianity 'The Empty Cross' - considering the idea of resurrection through the resurrection of Aslan in 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'. Finding out what the empty cross symbolises in Christianity, what Christians believe about resurrection and exploring the Easter story.
