Y4 Spring 1 2019
Topic 3: Out of India!
For the first part of the Spring term, we’ll be learning about life in India. This will cover the following areas:
• Where is India?
• Looking at maps to identify counties surrounding the country, as well as the landscape of India.
• What is the weather like in India?
• How is life different for rich and poor people?
• What is life like on a tea plantation?
• Why is India a land of contrasts?
English: We will be studying ‘Cloud Tea Monkeys’ by Mal Peet and Elspeth Graham, as well as ‘Grandpa Chatterji’ by Jamila Gavin. This will form the basis for our work on narrative writing.

Maths: We will continue to work on our arithmetic of using all four number operations, learning how to use formal methods as well as more efficient, mental methods. We will work in blocks focusing on Multiplication and division, and then moving on to area and then fractions just before half term.
Remember, there is a Year 4 Times Tables Check that is a new national test that all Year 4 children in the country will sit towards the end of this academic year. It is expected that all children will know their times tables up to and including 12x12 by the end of Year 4. Children will be given 25 questions and six seconds will be allowed for each question.
Geography: We will learn about the Human and Physical geography of India. We will also learn whereabouts it is situated by looking at a range of maps.
IT: We will be revising how to search the Internet safely and effectively, and presenting our research using Microsoft Publisher.
Art: We will produce Indian themed art work including studies of Banyan trees and Rangoli patterns.
Music: In music, we will be learning about music and musical instruments in India.
DT: We will be making our own Indian feast where the children will be cooking and sampling Indian food!
RE: We will be focusing on Hinduism.
PE: Indoor PE will be Indian dance. Outdoor games will be Netball.
