Y1 Summer 1 2020
Topic – To infinity and beyond…
For the first half of the summer term, we will be learning about Space with a focus on Neil Armstrong.
We will be thinking and learning about:
- The lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to international achievements, such as Neil Armstrong.
- Events beyond living memory that are significant globally, such as the moon landing in 1969.
- A comparison of significant individuals and how their missions were similar or different, such as Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus.
Literacy: We will be writing simple sentences and learning about what makes a good sentence, including adding capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We will also be adding adjectives and conjunctions into our sentences as well as similes. We will be discovering different genres of writing such as, non-fiction writing about our own planet, recounts about Beegu’s adventure on earth and finishing the end of stories.
Phonics: We will have daily phonics lessons and follow the letters and sounds programme. We will be securing phase 5 and focusing on applying the phonemes we know in our reading. In our phonics lessons, we will learn a sound, practise reading and writing it and then apply it by reading a sentence or set of words. Our space topic will link heavily to phonics with a big focus on ‘alien words’.
Number – Counting forwards and backwards in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Using our number skills to solve problems. Addition on a number line by counting in 10’s and 1’s. Simple division questions. Number bonds to 20 and the related subtraction facts. Measure – Using standard units within measure, such as grams, cm and ml.
Shape – Recapping 2d and 3d shapes and naming their properties.
IT: We have IT in the IT suite and also have access to laptops in class during the mornings. We will be practising logging on to the computers, practising mouse control and learning to type. We will be using programmes such as 2Publish+ and Tux Typing. We will also be practising maths using different educational games.
