Y5 Summer 2 2018

Topic 6: Brazil

For our final topic, we’ll be focusing on geography and science through our topic on Brazil.  We'll be learning lots of maps skills and trying to answer some of these questions:

  • Where is Brazil?  What is the climate like?
  • What is a biome?
  • How does Rio compare with Winchester?
  • Which birds and animals can be found in the Brazilian rainforests?
  • How do their lifecycles compare?
  • What happens if the rainforest is destroyed?

We’ll be looking at information texts and combining our writing skills with our topic knowledge to produce a visitor’s guide to Brazil.

Time: Calculating intervals of time across different time zones, using timetables and 24 hour clock. Calculation:  applying calculation skills to a range of contexts. Tables facts: knowing all tables facts to 12 x 12 from memory, using these to work out division facts e.g. if 7x8=56, then 56÷8=7 and applying this knowledge to multiply a wider range of numbers.  Multiplication and Division: using knowledge of tables facts to find factors, multiples and prime numbers. Counting, reading, writing and ordering numbers to at least 1,000,000, including decimals and negative numbers.  Statistics – creating, reading and interpreting data presented in different forms.
